Digital Distractions & Dieting - Fit Training Blog for Women 40, 50 and Beyond

Linda T Gottlieb, MA,CPT,CET

Did you know that it only takes a second to be swayed to grab a poor nutrition choice? I bet you do!

We've all been tempted to derail good nutrition intentions with foods that aren't quite our best choice. Since after that tempting moment has passed, that poor food choice ceases to catch our attention, science has a suggestion for you.

Play TETRIS.

What? You heard right! TETRIS, that vintage tile matching video game that was played on your computer (before smart phones) was a game that may have claimed your attention for minutes, or more.

Researchers from Plymouth University suggest that TETRIS can be a tool in your dieting arsenal to reduce food cravings.

Here's why:

According to the research team, Tetris prevents cravings by replacing your addiction or desire with a distraction. Most craving episodes last for just a few minutes, during which time you can see what you want and how it will make you feel better. However, if you distract your mind during those few minutes, you will no longer feel the craving as strongly. Those playing Tetris discovered that their cravings were up to 24 percent weaker than those that just watched a screen loading the game. Essentially, doing something with your hands and mind can take your thoughts away from the food you're longing to eat.

The Plymouth University study found that just three minutes of Tetris game play can reduce your cravings (as well as discourage you from both drinking alcohol and smoking).

Both Google Play and the Apple store carry the TETRIS app - billed as a new high-speed, action-packed take on the iconic block puzzle game.

Give it a try and let me know if this type of digital distraction might actually be a good thing!
